Aoun leaves office leavening Lebanon to face uncertain future
DAMASCUS (North Press) – President Michel Aoun left On Sunday the Baabda Palace as his country is engulfed by uncertainty politically and economically. Lebanon’s Parliament has so far been unable to agree on a successor.
Dozens of supporters gathered at Baabda Palace to say farewell to the 73-year-old Christian President Aoun, wearing the orange associated with his Free Patriotic Movement party.
Largely debatable, Aoun secured the presidency in 2016, endorsed by both Hezbollah and rival Maronite Christian politician Samir Geagea.
In his speech Aoun said the country needs huge efforts to overcome crisis.
“Without these efforts, we cannot put an end to our suffering. We cannot bring our country back on its feet. We cannot salvage Lebanon out of this deep pit,” Aoun added.
Currently Lebanon is led by a caretaker government. One of his remarkable works is the appendage he put onto a US-mediated deal delineating Lebanon’s southern maritime border with Israel which Hizbollah Secretary- General Hassan Nasrallah endorsed notably.
With Aoun left, Lebanon’s Baabda Palace remains vacant with no successor in line to replace him in a country ravaged by crises.
