Saturday to be last day of Iran’s ‘rioting’ – IRGC
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Saturday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) warned protesters not to go on streets, accusing “Zionist regime” of plotting the protests following the death of the Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini late in September.
“Do not come to the streets! Today is the last day of the riots,” Guards commander Hossein Salami said in an indication to the coming crackdown of protesters, according to The Jerusalem Post.
This comes at a time the United States heads to discuss the abuses by Iran in a meeting of the United Nations while reports reveal wide spread violations that resulted in the deaths of more than 200 people so far.
Salami’s remarks came during the funeral procession of victims of Shiraz deadly attack last week.
In a lengthy report, the IRGC accused Israel and the US of plotting the protests in the country.
Protests swept Iran after the murder of the 22-year-old Mahsa Amini at the hands of custody of the morality police.
On September 16, Amini died in Kasra hospital days after being detained for allegedly not complying with the country’s hijab regulations.
Amini was arrested when she was travelling with her family to Tehran. Witnesses reported that Amini was beaten in the police van after her arrest, but the police disputed these accounts and claimed that Amini had suffered a heart attack.
Since the death of Amini Iranian cities including Tehran the capital have been witnessing protests met with repressive crackdown by authorities, according to media and legal reports.
Several universities in Tehran witnessed demonstrations in response to Amini’s death.
“Several students were injured, one of them shot in the head,” Human rights group Hengaw said.
Students from the universities of Tehran, Shahid Beheshti, Tarbiat Modares, and Allameh Tabataba’i participated in the protests, and demanded clarification behind the circumstances that led to Amini’s death.
