Turkey to build settlement for Turkmens in Syria’s Idlib
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – A Turkish organization intends to build a new settlement for Syrian Turkmens in the countryside of Idlib, northwest Syria, a Turkish newspaper reported.
The Turkish Yeni Şafak stated that the local organization “AFAD” contracted with a Turkish company owned by the former deputy of the Justice and Development Party and Turkish businessman, Sabri Faran and his wife, to build a settlement in Idlib countryside.
The settlement consists of 450 houses, according to the newspaper that added that streets within it will bear Turkish names.
A Turkish businessman noted that building the settlement would finish “before 2023.”
On May 3, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was quoted as saying, “We are preparing a new project for the voluntary return of one million Syrian brothers who are in our country as guests.”
However, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on October 24 Turkey arbitrarily arrested, detained and deported hundreds of Syrian refugees to Syria between February and July.
“Between February and August 2022, 11,645 people were returned through Bab al-Hawa and 8,404 through Bab al-Salam,” according to the UNHCR reports.
