Political solution only path in Syria – UN Special Envoy

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen called on Security Council to support his efforts towards a political solution to end the 11-year-old Syrian conflict.

Pedersen said, in a briefing, “This political solution is the only path to sustainable peace,” in the war-torn country.

Pedersen added that although there are challenging realities that make finding a political comprehensive solution “difficult”, but the current situation is unacceptable and “there are ways forward.”

Conflict remains “very active” across the city, he said, as the “terrorist group” Islamic State Organization (ISIS) remains a serious threat.

On September 28, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in corporation with Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish), seized large number of ammunition and explosives belonging to the ISIS in the countryside of the city of Qamishli, northeastern Syria.

In addition, airstrikes carried out by Syrian government forces are still continuous on areas in northwest Syria, according to Pedersen’s briefing.

He highlighted the continuation of “mutual shelling” between Turkish forces and the SDF in Syria’s northeast.

He called on all stakeholders “to engage on step-for-step confidence building measures” towards advancing Resolution 2254.

The Special Envoy stressed that, with his team, he continues to monitor the issue of detained, disappeared, and missing individuals.

“Regrettably, we continue to receive reports of arbitrary arrests throughout the country,” he said.

Speaking of the revival of the Constitutional Committee meetings, Pedersen went further saying, “There is political will to engage in a spirit of compromise.”
