Landmine blast kills man in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A man lost his life on Sunday in a landmine blast in the town of Marrat, east of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.

Ahmed al-Ali, a resident of Marrat town, said, “The 60-year-old Hussein al-Jabr lost his life in an explosion of a remnant landmine of the Islamic State [ISIS] while he was working in his farmland on the outskirts of the town.”

The source added to North Press, “Al-Jabr hails from the al-Bakara clan, and has lived with his family for years in the town of Marrat, which is under the control of Syrian government forces in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.”

The countryside of Deir ez-Zor is full of explosive materials planted by ISIS, as it was the last stronghold of the terrorist group.

In 2020, Syria was the highest country regarding landmine fatalities, as 2,729 people lost their lives in mine blasts, according to the Landmine Monitor.
