Iraqi official reveals toll of families repatriated from Syria’s Hawl Camp
ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displaced revealed on Wednesday to North Press the total number of Iraqi families returned from Hawl camp, east of Hasakah city in northeastern Syria.
The spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displaced Ali Abbas Jahangir told North Press that a new batch of Iraqi families came from Hawl Camp into the country.
The batch included 158 families, comprising 659 individuals, the spokesman said, adding that all individuals were subjected to sorting and security procedures.
On Tuesday, a source in the camp told North Press that Iraqi authorities repatriated 157 families from Hawl Camp to al-Jada’a camp in the Iraqi Governorate of Mosul.
Every Iraqi repatriated from Hawl camp undergoes a security check conducted by a security committee, Jahangir said. “The committee meets families in the camps one by one, and then transfer them to their areas.”
Jahangir noted that the total number of Iraqi families repatriated from the camp reached 925 families.
The last statistics provided by the Iraqi Ministry for Migration and Displaced, prior to repatriating this batch, showed that 790 families had been returned. Therefore, the number of families should have been 948 and not 925.
The spokesman explained that “the total number of individuals is the same, but the number of families shrink because some families consist of one or two individuals; these type of families merge with their bigger families and thus reducing the total number.”
Hawl Camp, 45 km east of the city of Hasakah, is a house for 55.829 individuals, including 28.725 Iraqis, 18.850 Syrians and 8.254 of foreign nationalities, according to the latest statistics obtained by North Press.
