QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The House of Representatives elected on Thursday the Kurdish politician Abdul Latif Rashid as president, paving the way for the formation of a new government and ending a year of political upheaval.

Rashid won the presidency against the former Iraqi president Barham Salih.

The Media Department of the House of Representatives said in a statement, “Rashid won 162 votes, while Salih won 99 votes and 8 were considered invalid, out of the total number of voters of 269 deputies.”

Rashid’s first order was to nominate a prime minister to form a government to replace caretaker premier Mustafa al-Kadhemi, filling a year-long political vacuum since the October 2021 general election.
