Former opposition leader survives murder, two bodies found in Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – A former leader of Syrian opposition survived an assassination attempt with an IED planted by unknown individuals in a neighborhood in Daraa Governorate, south Syria.

Local sources told North Press that on Wednesday the former leader Khalid Abdurrahim (Aba Zaid) was subjected to an assassination attempt through planting an IED close to a house in al-Arba’in neighborhood.

However, he didn’t get harmed.

The source added that Aba Zaid was the leader of a military group (18 March regiment) when the opposition factions were controlling the governorate.

After the government regained control over Daraa, he obtained a settlement card and didn’t join any military formations.

Currently, he is a member of the Central Committee in Daraa, which is responsible for negotiations with the government forces.

On Wednesday, residents in the northern countryside of Daraa found two bodies of individuals who were kidnapped days ago in two different areas, sources told North Press.

The sources added the residents found the body of Youssef Issam Alloh, bearing traces of gunshot in an agricultural area close to Daraa.

The body of Abi Abdullmajid al-Hariri was found near Nassib village in the eastern countryside of Daraa.

The sources noted that al-Hariri hails from the town of al Sheikh Maskin, north of Daraa.

He worked in fuel station in Nassib where he was kidnapped by unknown individuals a week ago.

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been living in a state of insecurity, with one or two daily assassinations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, not to mention the spread of thefts.

In 2021, Daraa Governorate went through an 80-day-seige. After that, a number of Daraa’s notables and government forces, with mediation of Russian officers, reached a ceasefire agreement on September 5, 2021, including handing over weapons and deploying governmental security posts in the towns of the governorate.
