6 million Syrians require assistance to cope with winter conditions – UN
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Stephane Dujarric the Spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said on Monday that 6 million people will require humanitarian assistance to cope with harsh winter conditions.
Dujarric said through a press conference in New York City that the assistance increased 33% compared to the last year.
He pointed out that the winter response strategy should focus on helping people most at risk, including those living in remote and high-altitude areas along with the most vulnerable, such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, people with disabilities and people with chronic medical conditions.
“Among those prioritized for assistance are displaced people who live in tents or makeshift shelters including 800.000 people residing in tents in north-west Syria” Dujarric added.
He stressed on that $200 million is urgently needed to fill the funding gap and allow the UN partners to meet winter-related needs between October 2022 and March 2023.
