NGO calls on UN to end Turkish assaults against northern Syria

QAMISHLI, Syrian (North Press) – A human rights organization in Hasakah Governorate, northeast Syria, called on the United Nations on Sunday to take action and stop Turkish attacks against the region.

On the third annual anniversary of the invasion of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad, Human Rights Organization Jazira – a non-governmental non-profit organization operating in Jazira Region (Hasakah Governorate) – issued a statement that was read in front of the UN office in the city of Qamishli.

In October 2019, the Turkish forces and their affiliated armed opposition factions, also called the Syrian National Army (SNA), launched a military offensive called Operation Peace Spring to occupy the cities of Tel Abyad and Sere Kaniye and oust the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The operation displaced more than 300.000 of the areas’ original inhabitants, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The statement was read by co-chair of the organization Avin Jouma who said the Turkish state and the affiliated SNA factions “committed war crimes and used internationally outlawed weapons.”

The statement noted that breaches upon the two areas of Sere Kaniye and Tel Abyad continue with no deterrence or any international action to stop it.

“We call on the United Nations and the permanent members of the Security Council to take action for an immediate withdrawal of Turkish forces and its armed factions from Syrian territories,” the statement read.

The organization called for an end to continued Turkish threats and its drone strikes.

The organization asked fate of abductees and detainees be verified and called for the formation of an international and independent judicial investigation committee run by UN “to reveal all violations and crimes committed since the start of the Turkish aggression.”
