Landmine blast in Deir ez-Zor claims child’s life

DEIR EZ-ZOR Syrian (North Press) – A child lost his life on Saturday in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria, in a landmine explosion that was planted previously by the Islamic State Organization (ISIS).

A local source from the town of al-Suway’iyah in the countryside of Abu Kamal city, east of Deir ez-Zor said, Yazan al-Sami, 8, lost his life in a landmine explosion.

The child tried to move the mine, as he considered a metal object in the form of a doll.

The mine exploded close to a deserted house at the outskirts of the town.

The source told North Press that al-Sami descends from the city of Hama in central Syria. Al-Sami along with his family came to the town nearly two years ago.

In 2020, Syria topped the list of landmine victims in the world with Afghanistan coming second, according to a Landmine Monitor report.

The eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor witnesses many similar incidents, considering it was the last stronghold of ISIS, and the remnants of the war are widely spread there.
