Unknown gunmen kill government soldier in Syria’s Daraa

DARRA, Syria (North Press) – A military group affiliated with the Syrian government forces arrested on Tuesday two men in Daraa eastern countryside after a soldier of the group was killed by unknown men in Daraa city a day earlier.

A local source told North Press, “A military group affiliated with the Syrian government Air Force Intelligence Branch, led by Abu Ali al-Lahham, raided a house in the town of al-Musayfrah in Daraa eastern countryside using RPGs and gun machines.”

The source added that the raid resulted in the arrest of Muhammad Baha’ al-Zoubi and Othman Bashar al-Asaad, and the injury of Ibrahim Baha’ al-Zoubi. After the arrests, the house was set on fire.

A local source told North Press that a man named Moamen Imad Jawabra was shot dead on Monday evening by unknown gunmen in the Tariq al-Sadd neighborhood in Daraa city.

Jawabra was a previous member in the Syrian opposition armed factions, and then joined the Military Security Branch of the Syrian government after engaging in the 2018 settlement agreement.

In July 2018, the Syrian opposition armed factions and government forces reached a settlement agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa Governorate. Under the deal, the opposition militants who agreed to hand over their heavy weapons were handed a settlement card and allowed to stay in Daraa, while those opposed the agreement would go to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front).

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been living in a state of insecurity, with one or two daily assassinations targeting civilians and members of the government forces, not to mention the spread of thefts.
