Iraqi-Iranian militia arrives in Syria’s Idlib

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – In its first appearance in the region, a convoy of the Iranian-backed Iraqi al-Abrar militia arrived, on Wednesday, in the city of Maarat al-Numan in the south of Idlib Governorate in northwest Syria.

A military source of the Syrian government forces’ Fourth Division told North Press that, the convoy consisted of five ZU-23-2 armored vehicles, three buses carrying 110 militants, and an ammunition truck.

The convoy stationed at the northern square of Maarat al-Numan city in preparation for deployment on the fronts of Saraqib and Zawiya Mountain in the southern and eastern countryside of Idlib, the source added.

This convoy is considered the first of its kind of the Iraqi al-Abrar militia coming from the city of Sukhna east of Homs Governorate after an invitation from the Iranian-backed Quds Force, according to the same source.

The source pointed out that most of the militants are Iraqis and this is the first time to enter Idlib in the shade of incoming information regarding a new convoy of Iranian-backed Liwa Fatemiyoun moving towards the western countryside of Aleppo in the upcoming days to reinforce battles’ fronts against Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front).

In Mid-July 2022, the Iranian-backed militias stationed in Syrian north brought military reinforcements from Sayyidah Zaynab area south of Damascus to the contact lines with Turkish-backed armed opposition factions in the northern countryside of Aleppo.
