ICRC president assigns special coordinator for NE Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The President of theInternational Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced on Monday the assignment of a special coordinator for northeast Syria in light of “untenable” humanitarian situation inside and outside camps and detentions.

This came in a report publicized by the ICRC, in which it highlighted the deteriorating conditions in northeastern Syria particularly in Hawl Camp east of Hasakah.

President of the ICRC, after discussions with concerned countries on the sideline of United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week in New York, announced the assignment of the special coordinator.

People in Hawl “suffer poor access to health services, adequate food, and infrastructure,” the report said, noting that prospect of “returns and repatriation” are bleak.

Hawl Camp, 45 km east of the city of Hasakah, is a house for 55.829 individuals, including 28.725 Iraqis, 18.850 Syrians and 8.254 of foreign nationalities, according to the latest statistics obtained by North Press.

The camp witnesses murders with different methods, most notably firearms. The management of the camp fears that the latest Turkish threats of invading areas in northern Syria would pave the way for ISIS to reorganize its ranks; North Press cited a statement by the management as saying.

The special coordinator’s task will be to contact countries and organizations to “alleviate immediate humanitarian concerns and for sustainable long-term solutions for the populations stranded in the camps and in places of detention,” the report added.

It stressed efforts will be paid for “the dignified and voluntary return of Syrians and Iraqis to their homes.”
