14.6 million people need humanitarian assistance in Syria – UNHCR

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Thursday that 14.6 million people need humanitarian aid across Syria in 2022, which means 9% increase from 2021.

This came in a report issued by the UNHCR on September 15, 2022 saying, “After twelve years of the Syrian crisis, 14.6 million people need humanitarian aid across the country, as the UN estimated, including nine percent increase from the previous year.”

The report spoke of the security situation describing it as “unpredictable”, in addition to the increasingly dire economic situation as the economic deterioration is a major driver of needs.

The 2022 Syria Humanitarian Needs Overview (HNO) estimates that over 14.6 million people need humanitarian assistance inside Syria, including 6.9 million internally displaced Syrians, the report read.

The HNO added that about 9.6 million people are in severe need of humanitarian assistance.

The UNHCR report stated that $465.2 million is requested for the Syrian operation in 2022.
