US commander urges countries to repatriate national from Syria’s Hawl
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), Michael “Erik” Kurilla, called on countries, on Monday, to repatriate their nationals from Hawl Camp, east of Hasakah in northeast Syria.
During a press conference held at the US Embassy in the Jordanian capital, Amman, Kurilla said he encourages all countries to bring back their nationals from Hawl Camp and reintegrate them into society.
On September 9, Kurilla – accompanied by the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi – visited Hawl Camp in northeastern Syria. The visit came in conjunction with an anti-ISIS security campaign in the camp since August 25.
In his visit, the commander urged all countries of origin “to repatriate, rehabilitate, and reintegrate their citizens.”
In Amman, the general said that about 50% of the camp residents carry ISIS ideology, while the rest have no other places to live and wish to return to their countries.
The commander stressed that there is no solution to Hawl issue unless all countries of origin repatriate, rehabilitate, and reintegrate their citizens.
He stated that there is coordination with the Iraqi government to return all Iraqi families, who make about 27.000 individuals in total of 56.000 in Hawl Camp.
On September 9, Iraq’s Ministry of Displacement and Migration announced that 766 Iraqi families were repatriated from Hawl Camp, after subjecting them to security measures.
