Shelling between government, opposition in Syria’s Latakia, Idlib

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – De-escalation zone in the countryside of Latakia and Idlib in northwest Syria witnessed on Sunday mutual shelling between Syrian government forces and Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, known as Syrian National Army (SNA).

According to what an opposition source told North Press, the government forces targeted, with artillery shells and rockets, opposition positions in the villages and towns of Fatterah, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra, Benin, al-Ruweiha and al-Bara in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib, as well as Maarat al-Naasan in east of Idlib.

The source added that the shelling also targeted several positions in the Jabal al-Akrad and Turkmen Mountain north of Latakia Governorate, after a state of relative calm prevailed in the area in the past few days.

Meanwhile, a source of the National Front for Liberation told North Press that al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room targeted, with heavy artillery, the government forces’ positions in Abu Ali Hill and Nahashba, north of Latakia.

The areas in the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria continue to witness daily exchange of shelling between the SNA factions and the government forces, despite being part of the ceasefire agreement signed between Russia and Turkey in March 2020, which stipulates a halt of all military actions in Idlib.
