SDF efforts make Syria’s Hawl Camp safer – CENTCOM
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) praised efforts paid by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in pursuing militants of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) in Hawl Camp east of Hasakah, northeast Syria.
Colonel Joe Buccino, CENTCOM communications director, said in a statement, “For the past two weeks, Syrian Democratic Forces have been conducting security operations in al-Hol displaced persons camp.”
It also stressed that Humanity and Security operation contributes to “make the camp safer for those residents who remain or wish to return to their countries of origin.”
On August 25, the Asayish announced launching the second phase of Operation “Humanity and Security” in Hawl Camp to pursue the ISIS sleeper cells.
The first phase was launched in 2021 in response to calls of community and tribal leaders in Hawl countryside to reduce crimes at the camp.
The operations resulted in “the arrest of dozens of ISIS operatives and the dissolution of a major ISIS facilitation network both within the camp and throughout Syria,” Buccino said.
The CENTCOM added that “Combined Joint Task Force is heavily involved in advising, assisting, and enabling the Syrian Democratic Forces,” to fulfill its tasks.
The CENTCOM’s statement highlighted the need that international community support efforts to “eliminate the ISIS threat” through repatriation of their nationals residing in the camp.
Hawl Camp, 45 km east of the city of Hasakah, is a house for 55.829 individuals, including 28.725 Iraqis, 18.850 Syrians and 8.254 of foreign nationalities, according to the latest statistics obtained by North Press.
The camp witnesses murders with different methods, most notably firearms. The management of the camp fears that the latest Turkish threats of invading areas in northern Syria would pave the way for ISIS to reorganize its ranks; North Press cited a statement by the management as saying.
