QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The rate of suicides have been dramatically increased in Syria during recent years, as it recorded 124 suicides during 2022.
Asharq al-Awsat said in a report published on Tuesday that the number of suicides that took place in Syrian government-held areas has reached 95 ones, including 69 males, since the beginning of 2022 and as of June.
While the number of suicides that took place in opposition-held areas during this year has reached 31, including 11 young men and women, 11 women and nine men.
The greatest number of suicides was in Aleppo Governorate that has witnessed 25 suicides, followed by Rif Dimashq with 19 ones, and Tartus Governorate with 12 ones, according to the report.
The report added that Syrian areas witnessed 166 suicides in 2021, 197 suicides in 2020 and 124 suicides in 2019.
Asharq al-Awsat added in its report that most of the suicides were committed due to psychological reasons as “disorders have spiked in Syria due to the conflict that erupted in 2011. They are caused by extreme terror and sadness, loss of a sense of security and social support, fragmentation of family bonds, difficult living conditions and the lack of the most basic living conditions.”
