Remnants of Syrian war claim lives of 7 children in week

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – In a week, remnants of war claim the lives of four siblings in Idlib Governorate in northwestern Syria, and other three children in Homs Governorate, central Syria.

Business Standard reported, citing Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), that an explosion took place on Monday in an abandoned apartment in the city of Binnish, east of Idlib, killing four siblings.

Two days ago, another explosion took place in agricultural lands in Homs, claiming the lives of three children.

During the last four months, the toll of victims of the explosive remnants of war and landmines exceeded 22 people, including seven children, and 29 injuries, including three children, Save the Children reported.

“Landmines are seeds of death sown by adults that have their most deadly impact on children … Children suffer unique patterns of injury and are far more likely to die from blast wounds than adult conflict casualties,” Beat Rohr, Acting Director for Save the Children’s Syria Response Office, said on Tuesday.

Save the Children called on all actors to curb the use of the weapons, as children are their main victims.

It also called on donors to increase support for mine-clearance and to provide more efforts to raise awareness in order to alleviate the risks of the remnants on children.
