Soldier may shot Shireen Abu Akleh – Israeli army

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Israeli Army said on Monday that the Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh who was killed on May was probably killed by an Israeli soldier.

However, the Israeli Army did not decisively accept responsibility for killing her.

On May 11, Abu Akleh and six journalists arrived at the western entrance of the Jenin refugee camp in the northern occupied West Bank to cover an ongoing arrest operation by Israeli Security Forces and the ensuing clashes, according to a report published by Office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Several single, seemingly well-aimed bullets were fired towards them from the direction of the Israeli Security Forces, injuring Ali Sammoudi in the shoulder, and hitting Abu Akleh in the head, killing her immediately, the report added.

Abu Akleh was killed while wearing a blue flak jacket and a helmet marked “Press.”

“It is not possible to unequivocally determine the source of the gunfire which hit Ms. Abu Akleh,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.”

It is most likely that Abu Akleh was accidentally hit by IDF gunfire, while they were firing toward suspects identified as armed Palestinian gunmen, the statement added.

Earlier, the US concluded that shots fired from the position of Israeli soldiers were “likely responsible for the death” of Abu Akleh.
