Syrian detainee tortured to death in Lebanon

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Lebanese media said a Syrian detainee was tortured to death at one of the Lebanese prisons, they also referred to judicial directives to hold those responsible for investigating the detainee accountable.

Military Court’s Government Commissioner Judge Fadi Akiki examined on Friday the body of the Syrian detainee, Bashar Abdullso’oud.

Abdullso’oud died under torture following a heart attack, during an investigation conducted by elements of State Security.

After examining the body, Akiki requested the detention of the lieutenant in charge of the Bint Jbeil, South Lebanon State Security Center, where the Syrian detainee died.

The Judge also ordered the detention of other officers from the same regional office, as well as their colleagues who handled the transfer of the detainee from Beirut to the south of the country, according to The Beirut International Voice.

The deceased had previously been arrested and interrogated after being identified by members of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) as one of their “associates,” adding that during his interrogation, “he confessed that he belonged to the ISIS.

The daily al-Akhbar said the Syrian was arrested on August 25, the same night he was subjected to torture, without specifying the date of death.

The newspaper accused security officials of “trying to cover up the incident, claiming that the detainee died of an overdose.”

The Directorate responded on Friday to the al-Akhbar report, saying that the detainee had confessed during the investigation of his affiliation with ISIS.

It added the death incident was referred to the “competent court”, under its supervision, and that the court is responsible for revealing the results of the investigations and issuing a legal ruling.
