Calls in NE Syria for open sit-ins in front of US-Russia military bases

Raqqa (North Press) – On Thursday, activists in northeastern Syria called for open sit-ins in front of military bases present in the region.

A statement was issued by activists circulated on social media outlets calling for open protests in front of military bases of the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS and the Russian forces.

Omar Muhammad, an activist from Raqqa, said that military bases here represent countries which were part of the ceasefire agreement signed with Turkey in October 2019.

Following the Turkish incursion into the two cities of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad in October 2019, Turkey signed two ceasefire agreements, one with Russia and the other with the US stipulating ceasing all hostilities and the withdrawal of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) 32 km away from the Turkish border.

The SDF did withdraw from the border areas according to the agreement, but Turkey continues targeting the area.

Russia that signed the ceasefire agreement with Turkey, and the Global Coalition as a partner to the SDF in the fight against the Islamic State Organization (ISIS), are both accountable for the Turkish crimes, Muhammad said.

He added that activities that reject Turkey’s recent escalation should take another dimension. Besides, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) need to exert pressure on the international community.

Muhammad considered the continuation of the Turkish escalation with no stance shown by the international community makes hundreds of thousands of people subject to fires of the Turkish government whose breaches are on the rise.

Civil and political activists in northeastern Syria want to send a message to the international community to disclose the criminal conduct of Turkey against armless civilians, Muhammad noted.
