Syrian government shows fragile position regarding Turkey’s threats – Kurdish politician

ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – Member of the Executive Committee of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), Hassan Muhammad Ali, said that they take the recent Turkish threats seriously, pointing out the need for good preparation for an appropriate response if Turkey implements its threats.

The SDC is the political wing of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES). It was founded in 2015 and includes all the communities of north and east Syria.

This came during a dialogue session held by the SDC in Shahba region (Aleppo northern countryside) and was attended by representatives of political parties and civil institutions operating in the region.

Shahba region, houses IDPs of the Kurdish city of Afrin which was occupied in 2018 by Turkey following a military operation called “Olive Branch” to push away the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) under the pretext of protecting Turkey’s “national security”.

In an interview with North Press, Muhammad Ali said that the SDC is working politically to prevent Turkey from launching new attacks in northern Syria.

The leader believed that the current political situation is different from that of previous years, and that Turkey has not obtained the approval from international and active powers to implement its threats.

He pointed out that the international community will not allow Turkey to launch a new military operation in Syria, and that Turkey does not have the cards it used in the past.

The operation caused the displacement of about 300.000 of the original inhabitants of the Kurds of Afrin who have been taking shelter in 40 villages and five camps in Shahba region since then.

There are about 16.000 displaced families from Afrin distributed over 42 villages and towns in Shahba region, in addition to 1.870 families, comprising 7.500 individuals, now living in the camps of Barkhodan, Sardam, Afrin, al-Awda, and Shahba, according to the Social Affairs and Labor Board of the Afrin region, currently operating in Aleppo northern countryside.

Muhammad Ali indicated that Turkey has turned into a dangerous country that supports terrorism in all regions. Giving the permission to Turkey is helping terrorism to expand again.

The member of the SDC Executive Committee stated that the recent Turkish messages to the Syrian government are only tricks.

“If Turkey is honest that it is supporting the Syrian regime to fight terrorism, then it has to get out of Syria,” he noted.

“Turkey aims at occupying more Syrian lands, especially Aleppo, all the way to Mosul,” he said.

“The Syrian government showed fragile positions regarding the refusal of such Turkish moves, stressing that it will resist, but these positions are not enough,” he further explained.

“We, as SDC, want these positions to be transformed into actual ones, and to be presented to the UN Security Council,” he concluded.

Shahba region has been militarily protected by Russian and Syrian government forces since 2018.
