Government soldier killed, another survived in Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – A soldier of Syrian government forces was killed on Saturday after being targeted by unknown gunmen in north of Daraa, a governorate south Syria.

A source from the city told North Press that unknown gunmen, riding a motorcycle, targeted a government soldier in Gharz area, east of Darra.

The victim used to serve at Nassib (Jaber) border crossing on the Syrian-Jordanian border, and he was killed when he was on his way to the city, the source added.

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been living in a state of insecurity, with one or two daily assassinations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, not to mention the spread of thefts.

In 2021, Daraa Governorate went through an 80-day-seige. After that, a number of Daraa’s notables and government forces, with mediation of Russian officers, reached a ceasefire agreement on September 5, 2021, including handing over weapons and deploying governmental security posts in the towns of the governorate.

In a separate incident, a source told North press that a member of Military Security Branch affiliated with the government forces survived an assassination attempt, as his car was targeted with an IED in al-Kashef neighborhood in Daraa.

The targeting resulted in material damage to the car, however, the member managed to get out of the car, once it exploded.

As a result, he sustained injuries, according to the source.
