Syrian government forces shell opposition posts in Syria’s north

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, Syrian government forces escalated shelling on posts of Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), in the western countryside of Aleppo and the southern countryside of Idlib.

On the other hand, the SNA factions targeted several bases of the Syrian government forces.

The mutual shelling, that is escalated during the past few days, came after the announcement of the SNA to start a new military operation against the Syrian government forces in the countryside of Aleppo and Idlib after it has been stopped for two years.

Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subjected to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual shelling despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.

In March 2020, Russia and Turkey reached an agreement in Moscow that stipulated a ceasefire, the establishment of a safe corridor, and the conduct of joint patrols on the M4/Aleppo-Latakia Highway.

Military sources in Syrian opposition said that the government forces targeted the villages of Tuqad, Sheikh Suleiman, Maklabis, al-Habata, Blanta, Tedil, Kafr Ta’al, Kafr Nouran, and the vicinity of Regiment 46, west of Aleppo, with about 100 missiles and artillery shells.

The shelling of the aforementioned areas coincided with continuous shelling that have started since Sunday’s morning on the villages and towns of Fatterah, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra, al-Ruwaiha, Benin, and the outskirts of al-Bara in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib, in addition to the town of Ma’arat al-Naasan, east of Idlib, according to the sources.

Military sources of National Front for Liberation, operates under the umbrella of the SNA, said that al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room targeted posts of the government forces in the Regiment 46 and the towns of Urum al-Kubra, Miznaz, and the villages of Urum al-Sughra, Bala, and Basratun, west of Aleppo, with dozens of artillery shells.

The SNA, during less than 24 hours, thwarted a progress operation of the government forces in Maklabis area, west of Aleppo, according to the sources.

Although the Syrian government forces did not report any casualties during the unsuccessful progress operation, the sources of the National Front for Liberation claimed that several members of the Syrian government forces were killed and wounded.
