Peace and Freedom Front welcomes US excluding NE Syria from Caesar Act sanctions

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Peace and Freedom Front welcomed on Wednesday the decision to exclude areas not under the control of the Syrian government from the  Caesar Act sanctions, noting the need to open humanitarian crossings in light of the bad conditions.

The leadership body of the Peace and Freedom Front held on Tuesday its periodic meeting. The meeting discussed several issues, according to what was published on the body’s official website.

The Peace and Freedom Front is a political alliance that includes the “Kurdish National Council, the “Democratic Assyrian Organization, and the Arab Council in Al-Jazira and the Euphrates, and the Syrian Future Movement.

“The difficult economic situation and the miserable living situation were discussed. This negatively reflects on the state of stability and increases immigration in light of the regime’s intransigence and the lack of seriousness on the part of the international community to put an end to the Syrians’ tragedy,” the statement said.

On May 12, 2022, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (“OFAC”) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury issued Syria General License (“GL”) 22, authorizing specific economic activities in certain non-regime-held areas of northeast and northwest Syria.

The Front stressed the need to open humanitarian crossings and provide aid to the groups most affected by the crisis, including the three eastern governorates (Hasakah, Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor), given that their residents have been affected by drought and the lack of crops in recent years.

Tel Kojer crossing, which is located on the Syrian-Iraqi border, was closed after the veto of Moscow and Beijing in the UN Security Council in early 2020.
