Members of opposition faction rob store in Syria’s Sere Kaniye, traders strike
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Shop owners in the city of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) in the northern countryside of Hasakah, northeast Syria, went on strike on Monday after members of one of the Turkish-backed opposition SNA factions robbed a food store.
In October 2019, the Turkish forces and the SNA launched ground and aerial offensive against Sere Kaniye and Tel Abyad in NE Syria displacing approximately 300,000 civilians, human rights reports said.
“Members of the Turkish-backed Hamzat faction robbed a food store in the market of Sere Kaniye last night,” a local source told North Press.
Activists said that the store belongs to a dealer named Samir al-Aoun and it is only a few meters away from a Civil Police checkpoint.
Following the incident, a number of shop owners went on strike and protested in front of the local council and the Civil Police station, calling for an investigation into the theft and for the perpetrators to be held accountable.
Some activists on social networking sites stated that these thefts come in light of the conflict over trade in the city of Sere Kaniye. Some leaders of the armed factions try to to expel competing traders to fully control over the local markets.
