Germany tries Syrian accused of war crime in Syria

ERBIL, Iraq, KRI (North Press) – The German city of Frankfurt witnessed Wednesday the start of a trial against a Syrian man accused of fighting along the Islamic State Organization (ISIS), and committing a war crime when he was fighting with the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

In November 2015, the accused left the war and came to Germany. He was arrested there in August last year and has been in custody since then.

The Attorney General’s Office accused the 28-year-old man of joining ISIS in 2014 and completing a 15-day training course with the organization. He is said to have done security work for terrorist group, fought and traded in crude oil.

He was also accused of war crimes, as he is believed to have participated in desecrating the corpse of a fallen Syrian soldier in the fighting around the Syrian city of Homs at the end of 2013. During this time, the suspect was a member of the FSA.

Another allegation against the defendant is the violation of the War Weapons Control Act. According to the indictment, the man was in possession of a Russian machine gun and a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

On the first day of the hearing, he did not comment on the allegations, but announced that he would appear on the next day of the hearing which will take place on June 29.
