US Representatives express concern about Turkish incursion into northern Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Representatives of US House and Senates said on Wednesday that another Turkish incursion would have disastrous results and would displace countless vulnerable Syrians.

This came in a statement released by the US Representatives and the House Foreign Affairs Committee on the Turkish incursion into northern Syria.

On June 1, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan renewed his threats of launching a military operation on northern Syria, and specified his targets in the two Syrian cities of Manbij and Tel Rifaat, which include many Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The Representatives and the committee expressed their concern regarding the potential Turkish military operation into northern Syria, saying “We are extremely concerned about continued threats by Turkey to begin another military incursion into northern Syria.”

They stressed that any Turkish incursion will disrupt counter-ISIS operations by US and partner forces like the previous military operations.

Turkish forces with the Syrian National Army (SNA) have launched four major military operations in northern Syria since the start of the Syrian conflict, taking control of areas along the border in what it says is a bid to “protect its national security” and its frontier.

The statement indicated that the potential Turkish attack will also exacerbate Syria’s dire humanitarian crisis.

“Another Turkish incursion would have the same disastrous results, including displacing countless vulnerable Syrians.”

The press release confirmed that any Turkish escalation will negatively affect the US-led Global Coalition’s campaign against ISIS.

“We strongly urge the Turkish government and associated forces to refrain from any military operation so the focus in northern Syria can remain on ensuring the enduring defeat of ISIS and that further humanitarian disaster is avoided,” the statement read.
