Unknown gunmen shoot SDF fighter to death in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A fighter of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) was shot to death on Tuesday by unknown gunmen in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

Unknown gunmen, who were riding a motorbike, opened fire on the 27-year-old Ali al-Hazzaa in the outskirts of the town of al-Hisan, west of Deir ez-Zor, a military source of the SDF said.

Al-Hazzaa joined Deir ez-Zor Military Council, which is affiliated with the SDF, two months ago, the source added.

The Deir ez-Zor Military Council was founded following ISIS military defeat in the region. It is one of the military councils which operate under the umbrella of the SDF.

Recently, the countryside of Deir ez-Zor has witnessed an increase in killing cases against the SDF fighters, tribal leaders, civilians, and employees of the Autonomous Administration.

The countryside of Deir ez-Zor was an ISIS enclave which was liberated in 2019 by the SDF and the US-led Global Coalition. After that, a civil autonomous administration was formed to run the affairs of the region. This civil administration is affiliated with the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) defeated ISIS militarily.

On June 10, two SDF fighters were shot to death in the town of al-Busayrah, east of Deir ez-Zor. The next day, ISIS claimed responsibility for the targeting.
