Syrian militant arrested in Netherlands over crimes against humanity

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Netherlands Public Prosecution Service arrested on Tuesday a Syrian individual over charges amounts to crimes against humanity and war crime during the war in Syria.  

The 34-year-old unnamed Syrian suspect is reported to be a member in Liwa al-Quds militia (Jerusalem Brigade).

The Jerusalem Brigade was formed in 2013. It operates as a part of pro-Syrian government forces, and made up of Syrian Palestinians as well as native Syrian members. It is trained and supplied by Russian forces.

In a press release, the Prosecution Service said, “The Syrian government and militias have committed widespread violations of human rights and the law of war, according to the United Nations.”

“The militias were used in the crackdown on demonstrations of civilians, and to arrest civilians,” it added.

It went further saying that Liwa al-Quds could be classified as a “criminal organization” that committed international crimes.

The suspect applied for asylum in the Netherlands in 2020.

On April 14, German federal prosecutors charged a Syrian man, who was a member of the Free Palestine Movement, a groups that controlled the Yarmouk district in Damascus on behalf of the Syrian government, with war crimes against humanity.
