Casualties among government forces in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Two soldiers of the Syrian government forces were killed on Monday and another was wounded in an armed attack on a military post in a town east of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

Taking advantage of the dust storm the area has been going through, unidentified gunmen targeted a military post of the government forces on the outskirts of the city of Abu Kamal on the Syrian-Iraqi border with machine guns, said a military source from the Fourth Division of the government forces in Deir ez-Zor.

The source, who preferred not to be named for security reasons, said that two soldiers of the government forces were killed and another was wounded in the attack, while the gunmen fled towards the Iraqi border.

The source argued that the gunmen might belong to the Islamic State (ISIS); because those who were inside the post heard chants that were usually used by the ISIS members.

Iranian-backed militias and the Syrian government forces have been running vast swaths in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor since expelling ISIS in 2017.
