Dust storm in northeast Syria causes deaths and dozens of suffocation cases

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – An unprecedented dust storm hit on Sunday the areas of northeast Syria, especially Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa. It resulted in the death of 5 people, along with hundreds of cases of suffocation.

Awad al-Hayes (58) died while five members of his family sustained cases of suffocation as a result of the collapse of the roof of their house in the town of Arbiha in Deir ez-Zor, as a result of the dust storm.

Two children from the family were taken to the Hasakah hospitals. The rest of the family are still in al-Shuhail Hospital in Deir ez-Zor, in light of calls from the hospital’s medical staff for the residents to donate blood, according to a relative of al-Hayes family.

The storm was described by the residents of the area as unprecedented due to its severity and the disastrous effects it caused.

The storm also led to the death of an elderly man who had asthma in the village of  al-Harijia in the northern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

A women from the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor died  as a result of A woman died when an iron banner fell on her head due to the dust storm.

Pictures obtained by North Press show the effects of the damage to Abu Khashab camp, north of Deir ez-Zor, which houses displaced people from the areas of the Syrian government.

The storm caused damage to a large number of tents and the collapse of mud walls inside the camp.
