Russia identifies date for Syria’s Astana Peace Talks

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) –  Following discussions with Turkey and Iran, Russia identified Thursday an initial date for Astana Peace Talks for Syria in the  capital of Kazakhstan Nur-Sultan.

Russia Today website cited Russian special presidential envoy for the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov as saying that a tentative agreement was reached on the next Astana meeting to be held in late May in Kazakhstan.

“A tentative date was agreed upon, and I wish everything will be ok,” he added.

He noted that the date was identified following discussions with Iran and Turkey on one hand and both delegations of the Syrian government and the opposition on the other.

On Dec 21 and 22, the 17th round of Astana Peace Talks was convened in Kazakhstan’s capital with the participation of the guarantor countries (Iran, Russia and Turkey) as well as delegations of the United Nations, the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition.

The final statement of the 17th session mostly tackled issues related to the Syrian Constitutional Committee, terrorism, and humanitarian assistance.
