UN to launch 8th round of Syrian constitution talks  

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, UN Special Envoy for Syria issued invitations for the eighth round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee starting from May 28 to June 3 in Geneva.

“The international community must remain focused on achieving a comprehensive political solution to the conflict in Syria,” Geir Pedersen, said on Tuesday in his latest video briefing to the UN Security Council in New York on the latest political and humanitarian developments in the Syrian war.

Pederson said the 7th round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee ended on March 25, with delegations offering “at least some revisions to some of the texts presented, some of these embodied amendments indicating an attempt to reflect the content of the discussions, and narrow differences. Still, others contained no changes.” 

On March 25, the 7th round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee ended with no results achieved. The opposition delegation mentioned it would suspend its participation.

The Syrian Constitutional Committee has a Large and a Small Body: the Large Body comprises 150 members: 50 members of the government, 50 of the opposition, and 50 of civil society. While the Small Body comprises 45 members: 15 members for each party.
