Turkish-backed faction chops down trees in Syria’s Afrin

ALEPPO NORTHERN COUNTRYSDIE, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, a Turkish-backed faction chopped down 300 olive trees on the entrance to Jindires district in Afrin area, northern Aleppo.

Abdo Zamzam, leader of Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement faction, ordered members of his faction to cut down 300 olive trees in Jindires district, a special source told North Press.

Zamzam hails from the town of Qabtan al-Jabal in the western countryside of Aleppo.

The trees originally belong to Jwan Youssef, a civilian who fled Jindires during the Turkish invasion of Afrin in 2018. The trees were sold in the local market, the source said.

The objective of cutting down the trees was to build residential houses for members of the faction after the local council of Jindires approved to transfer the ownership of the farmland to the faction, the source added.

Turkish forces and their affiliated armed opposition factions took control of Afrin region in March 2018.

Turkish-backed factions continue committing violations in the region by chopping down trees, kidnapping, arresting, implementing  demographic changes and killing.
