Media activists in NE Syria honored on Kurdish Journalism Day
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On the occasion of Kurdish Journalism Day, Free Media Union honored, on Friday evening, a number of media activists in the city of Qamishli, northeast Syria.
Free Media Union is an independent professional institution deals with the rights of the journalists in northeast Syria. It holds a ceremony on April 22 every year in which it honors a number of local journalists and media activists.
Among those who were honored, were the North Press Agency correspondents in Hasakah city, Jindar Abdulqader, and Derik correspondent, Solnar Muhammad.
April 22 marks the Kurdish Journalism Day. On this day in 1898 the first printed newspaper in Kurdish named Kurdistan was issued in Egypt by Meqdad Medhat Badirkhan.
124 years since the publication of the first issue of Kurdistan newspaper, the Kurdish journalism has witnessed remarkable developments due to the margins of freedom that prevailed in the AANES-held areas, according to observers.
Earlier on Friday, the AANES congratulated all journalists and wished them success in their work.
“On the Kurdish Journalism Day, we commemorate our journalists who martyred for the sake of documenting the facts and presenting them to the publish opinion,” the AANES posted on its official Facebook account.
