Unknown airstrike kills, injures Iranian-backed militants in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A number of Iranian-backed militants were killed on late Wednesday due to unknown-source airstrikes that targeted military bases belong to the Iranian-backed militias on the Syrian-Iraqi border.

An unknown-source warplane targeted several Iranian military bases in Abu Kamal, a city in eastern Syria near the border with Iraq, a military source of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), told North Press.

According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the base of Hajj Askar, which is named after the IRGC commander in the town, was targeted, and the house of a leader of the IRGC was also hit.

The strikes killed three militants, including Zahqan Mahed, an intelligence official in the IRGC, and wounded five others, the source added in a phone call with North Press.

The militias lived a state of confusion after the strikes, leading them to take over some of the residents’ houses to hide out in fear of the strikes, according to the source.

The Syrian government forces and Iranian-backed militias control vast lands of the Syrian desert and the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

The region has lately witnessed fierce battles between the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) and the government forces, backed by the Iranian-militias.

On April 12, a drone strike hit a cargo vehicle belongs to an IRGC militia in al-Quriya, a town 50 km east of Deir ez-Zor.

Also on January 5, a drone targeted several IRGC ammunition depots in Abu Kamal.
