DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A member of the Syrian government-affiliated National Defense Forces (NDF) was killed and two others were wounded yesterday in an IED explosion that targeted their car in a town west of Deir ez-Zor, east of Syria, a military source in Deir ez-Zor said on Thursday.
The IED was planted in a made-of-dirt speed bump on the Nwair junction in the town, and exploded when an NDF military vehicle went over it, the source added.
The explosion killed an NDF member, who hailed from the town of al-Meri’iyeh east of Deir ez-Zor, and wounded two others, who were taken to a field hospital, and “now they are in good health,” the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, added, citing a doctor in the hospital.
So far, no party has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) sleeper cells are the main suspect.
Despite the intensive security campaigns to comb it, the Syrian Desert region is still a source of concern for the Iranian-backed militias and government forces, making them incur heavy losses due to operations carried out by ISIS sleeper cells.
On April 16, six members of the government forces were killed in an attack by ISIS that targeted their car on the outskirts of the al-Shola town, south of Deir ez-Zor.
