Syrian politician calls US curb Turkish escalation in NE Syria

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) The US-led Global Coalition should clarify its position over the recent Turkish military escalation against northeast Syria, an official of the Future Syria Party in Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria, said on Wednesday.

Since early 2022, the majority of villages of Zarkan (Abu Rasin) town in Hasakah are pounded by Turkey displacing many people and damaging civilians’ properties.

Thamer Shammeri, head of Future Syria Party in Deir ez-Zor, counted on the US-led Global Coalition that recently has announced partnership with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) continued.

Shammeri called on the Coalition to take a clear stance to end the Turkish aggression.

The civil society organizations and relevant international institutions should “take a firm stance and assume ethical and humanitarian responsibilities towards the barbaric territorial expansionist ambitions.”

“Turkey still has expansionist ambitions in northeast Syria and uses every possible power to achieve goals,” he said.

“The international silence towards the recurrent Turkish violations is but continuation of bloodshed as Turkey has its own mechanism in killing and destroying civilians of northeast Syria,” he added.

Yesterday, the SDF said since the beginning of April, Turkey has scaled up attacks on areas in northeast Syria, exploiting the silence of ceasefire guarantors; namely Russia and the US, towards these attacks.

On October 2019, the Turkish forces and their affiliated Syrian armed opposition factions (known as the Syrian National Army/SNA) invaded the two cities of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the US troops from the strip of the Syrian border.

In the same month of October, Turkey signed two ceasefire agreements one was with Russia and the other was with US stipulating ceasing all hostilities and the withdrawal of the SDF 32km away from the Turkish border.

The SDF did withdrew from border areas according to the agreement following bloody battles with Turkish forces.

However, several areas of northeast Syria have been under repeated bombardment since then.

According to residents, Turkish forces target, on a daily basis, all contact lines starting from Abu Rasin, to Tel Tamr and reaching to Ain Issa.
