Turkey goes ahead escalating in NE Syria, SDC

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) –Turkish escalation in areas northeast Syria continues, but it hasn’t gotten the consent for a military operation, the co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), Riyad Dirar, said.

Dirar’s talk comes in tandem with speculations by military and political officials in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) over an eminent Turkish operation in the region exploiting that the world is being engulfed  with the Russia-Ukraine war.

Turkey’s bombing and shelling in northeastern Syria “continue and have been consistent for a long time, but this doesn’t necessarily mean a military operation against the AANES areas,” Dirar said.

An eminent military Turkish operation against the region “is something not possible right now,” Dirar told North Press.

The Turkish government was yet to receive the American or Russian consent for conducting a military operation, according to him.

In late November 2021, suspended its potential military operation against northeast Syria, as a result of the continued Russian and American refusal and the absence of any consensus in this regard.

The continuous Turkish shelling is targeting several towns and villages in northeastern Syria, including the countryside of Ain Issa, north of Raqqa, and the outskirts of Tel Tamr in Hasakah countryside.

In late 2019, the Turkish forces accompanied by the Turkish-backed armed factions conducted a military operation by which they occupied Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad, as well as towns and villages in the countryside of Hasakah and Raqqa.
