IED behind attack on US troops in NE Syria, Pentagon
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A recent attack that targeted US forces present in Syria was caused by explosives being placed at a facility hosting troops east Syria and not rocket fire, the Pentagon said on Monday.
On Monday, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said it appeared that the attack on the Green Village was due to explosive charges deliberately being placed near US troops.
“There’s a concern about some sort of insider threat. If the going assumption is now that they were deliberate placement of charges inside Green Village, of course, that’s a concern,” Kirby said without pointing the accusation figure to any specific party.
On April 7, the US-led Global Coalition in eastern Syria was subjected to an attack that struck two support buildings, “At this time, four US service members are being evaluated for minor injuries and possible traumatic brain injuries,” the coalition said in a statement.
The US military first said that the attack on the Green Village in Deir ez-Zor countryside, east Syria, was from indirect fire, but officials now believe it was explosive charges.
The US-led global has deployed its troops into northeast Syria since September 2014 to support the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) and to ensure the sustainable defeat of the organization.
