Government, opposition exchange shelling in Syria’s northwest

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – The de-escalation zones in northwest Syria witnessed on Sunday escalation of mutual shelling between the government forces and Turkish-backed opposition factions .

The government forces bombed the opposition’s military sites in the villages and towns of al-Fatira, Kafr Aweed, Sufuhn, Kansafra, Benin, al-Ruwaiha and the outskirts of al-Bara in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib, with heavy artillery and missiles, military sources in the Syrian opposition told North Press.

The outskirts of the town of Ma’arat al-Naasan, east of Idlib, and the outskirts of the towns of Kafr Noran, Taqad and Ajel in the neighboring western countryside of Aleppo, were also intensively bombed by the government forces. No casualties were reported though, the sources said.

Meanwhile, sources specialized in monitoring air traffic told North Press that the Turkish forces deployed in their bases in Zawiya Mountain targeted, with a surface-to-air missile, a Russian reconnaissance plane over Idlib, without being able to hit it.

Despite the entry into force of the de-escalation agreement signed between Russia and Turkey in 2020, northwest Syria has been witnessing military escalation and mutual bombing between the government forces and opposition factions for months.
