Iraqi National Security Advisor discusses Hawl Camp with foreign ambassadors to Iraq

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – In a meeting with the ambassadors of three foreign countries to Iraq, Iraq’s National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji, discussed several issues, most notably the  issue of Hawl Camp in northeast Syria.

On, Thursday, al-Araji met in Baghdad with Major General Roger John Noble, the Australia’s Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism, and Paula Ganly, Australia’s ambassador to Iraq.

The two sides discussed issues of combating terrorism and the international cooperation to eliminate it. They also discussed the issue of Hawl Camp, according to what was published by the media office of the National Security Advisor.

In another meeting today, al-Araji met with Mark Bryson-Richardson ,the UK ambassador to Iraq and they both discussed the issue of Hawl Camp.

In early March, an Iraqi delegation arrived in northeast Syria with the aim of taking back more Iraqi refugees residing in Hawl Camp, east of Hasakah, northeast Syria.

Al-Araji also met on Wednesday with Matthew H. Tueller , the US ambassador to Iraq in Baghdad.

In the meeting the issue of Hawl Camp was touched on in addition to supporting Iraq in the rehabilitation of some detention centers.

In 2019/2020, the Iraqi government resumed trips to return Iraqis from Hawl Camp, but the government suspended those trips due to pressure from Iraqi tribal notables who accused these returnees of being ISIS members, according to refugees.

Since mid- 2021,  about 450 families, with a number of approximately 1,780 people, have been taking back to Iraq.

“The issue of Hawl Camp is very important, and the ministry and government have paid great attention to it, as the camp houses approximately 31,000 Iraqi people,” Ali Abbas, a spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Immigration, told North Press at the end of last March.
