Syrians ready to support Russia in Ukraine, al-Assad’s advisor

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Special Adviser at the Syrian Republic Presidency, Luna al-Shebel, expressed yesterday her country’s support to Russia in its war with Ukraine.

Russia was not only threatened, but also presented documents confirming that Ukraine was the one to initiate the attack if Russia didn’t protect itself, in an interview with BBC Arabic, al-Shebel said.

She also noted that according to Article 51 in the UN Charter, states are allowed to defend themselves in the event of a threat or aggression.

“In fact, many Syrians have expressed their desire to volunteer and fight alongside Russia in its military operation,” al-Shebel said.

“Russia has not formally requested Syrian volunteers from the Syrian state,” she said.

She also clarified that Syria is unable to take procedures on its own.

“The Syrian state cannot take any official action as long as there is no request from Russia in this regard,” She told the interviewer.

It’s worth mentioning that Russia has been a key ally and supporter for the Syrian regime since the beginning of Syrian war, and especially in 2015 as Russia sent forces to help al-Assad’s beleaguered army and soon after the government started regaining control of the areas it had lost.
