SNC calls for referring Russia, Syrian government’s war crimes file to ICC
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, the opposition Syrian National Coalition (SNC) called on the United States to refer the file of war crimes committed by Russia and the Syrian government in Syria to the International Criminal Court in tandem with the Ukrainian file.
Recently, the Syrian opposition has scaled up its political movement in Washington to re-put the Syrian file back on the forefront of the US attention and persuade the administration of Joe Biden not to normalize with the Syrian government.
In the US consulate based in Turkey’s Istanbul, a delegate of the SNC headed by Salem Muslat met with Ethan Goldrich, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs with responsibility for the Levant.
The delegate demanded file of war crimes committed by Russia and the Syrian government in Syria refer to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in tandem with the Ukrainian file and the necessity to hold Assad and his “regime” accountable, , the SNC said on its Facebook account.
Also, the SNC delegate and Goldrich discussed the outcomes of a meeting in Washington D.C. over Syria.
In the context of the recent political movement of the Syrian opposition, senior figures of the opposition, participated in 2021 in a symposium in the US Congress where several US deputies and senators attended. The forum discussed the future of the military presence in Syria and ways to stabilize democracy and hold accountable perpetrators of Human rights violations.
on Saturday, the SNC called the United Nations to strip the international legitimacy from the Syrian government and expel the government’s representatives from the UN.
The political board of the SNC released a statement calling the international community to grant the Syrian government’s seat at the UN to the SNC given it is the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.
The statement said the officers have made a decision to communicate with the UN to take back Syria’s seat and give it to its real owners.
In late December 2021, Ayman Abdulnour, a Syrian writer and an opponent and attended the US Congress symposium, said in Washington said “the opposition delegate felt a consensus and a will by the leaders in charge of foreign policies in the Republican and Democratic parties to hold Syrian President Bashar al-Assad accountable for the war crimes committed by his regime.”
