Al-Bukamal border crossing is open: Iraqi crossing official

ERBIL, Iraq (North Press) – The spokesman for the Iraqi border crossings, Alaa al-Din al-Qaisi, denied on Sunday the closure of  al-Qaim-al-Bukamal border crossing.

The crossing is operating as usual, and there no intention to be closed, al-Qaisi told North Press

Earlier today, Syrian opposition websites said that the Syrian government closed al-Bukamal border crossing with Iraq and prevented the entry and exit of freight and goods trucks to Syria and vice versa.

Sources said that the closure of the crossing came one day after a Russian military delegation visited the crossing.

On the Iraqi side, al-Bukamal crossing is called Husaybah border crossing, and it is located in al-Qaim District in Anbar Governorate.

The border crossing which links the capitals of Iraq and Syria was reopened five years after it was seized by ISIS

Al-Bukamal crossing had been out of the control of the Syrian government since mid-2012 after the opposition factions took control of the city, and in mid-June 2014, ISIS took control of the city and removed the border between Syria and Iraq.

On October 19, 2017, the Syrian government forces regained control of the city of al-Bukamal and its surroundings.
