Opposition leaders survive assassination attempt in Syria’s Daraa
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Two former leaders, worked within the ranks of the opposition, survived an assassination attempt last night after being targeted with an IED in the city of Daraa, south Syria.
Both Muhammad Jazwan and Abu Abdurrahman Masalma were subjected to an assassination attempt as a result of targeting their car with an IED in al-Abbasiya neighborhood in Daraa al-Balad, a local source told North Press.
The targeting did not result in any human losses, and was limited to material damage only, the source added.
The two persons are former leaders of the Syrian opposition, but they obtained settlement cards after the government forces took control of the area, and they did not join the military formations of the government forces, according to the source.
The Martyrs Documentation Office in Daraa, a local civil organization, documented 1,084 assassination attempts and attempts that killed 685 former fighters of the opposition who had undergone settlement and fighters with government forces or civilians, between the first settlement that took place in the summer of 2018 and the second one that started in September 2021.
Daraa has recently witnessed several assassinations targeting former opposition members, who were subject to settlement agreements, by unidentified individuals without any serious move by the government forces to reveal the perpetrators, according to the testimonies of residents.
