Nearly 90% of displaced from Syria’s Hasakah returned to their homes: UN

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that nearly 90 percent of the individuals (45,000), who had fled during the events in al-Sina’a prison in the city of Hasakah, northeast Syria, returned to their homes.

On January 20, militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) attacked al-Sina’a  prison in Guweran neighborhood, south of Hasakah.

The clashes between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and ISIS militants had caused mass displacement of the residents of the neighborhoods of Ghweran, al-Zuhour, al-Nashwa and Villat al-Humr towards the central and northern neighborhoods of Hasakah.

42,000 people returned to their homes, specifically in the neighborhoods of Guweran and al-Zuhour, on February 9,  the UN office said.

According to the UN agency, 20 families (100 people) are still in one of the collective centers, while about 400 families (2,000 people) are hosted by their relatives or others.

At the end of last January, families from Guweran neighborhood began on Monday to gradually return to parts of it after securing it, amid continued combing operations by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
